This retrospective exhibition by Scottish Tapestry Artists Regrouped (S.T.A.R.*) includes work from the 1960s up to the present day, showing the diversity of Scottish tapestry over the last 50 years, with work that embraces strong colour and a multiplicity of themes.

Tapestry has never gone away, but the new exhibition at An Lanntair is still pitched as something of a revival.

Suas Leis an Oir-Ghreus or Long Live Tapestry! was in fact first shown as Vive le Tapisserie! at the French Institute at the beginning of 2009, which proves in its own way that tapestry is something of an international language.

The exhibition comprises 4 miniatures each by 17 of Scotland's leading tapestry artists. All are members of the newly formed group STAR* (Scottish Tapestry Artists Re-Grouped) and graduates of the tapestry department of Edinburgh College of Art.

The artists are: Archie Brennan, Sara Brennan, Amanda Gizzi, Linda Green, Alice Hannigan, Maureen Hodge, Stephen Hunter, Fiona R Hutchison, William Jeffries, Ellen Lenvik, Birgitta MacDonald, Jo McDonald, Susan Mowatt, Colin Parker, Paul R Penrice, Anna Ray and Joanne Soroka.

Tapestry in edinburgh has been greatly influenced by the French Gobelin tradition, its revival instigated by Jean Lurcat. This exhibtion of 72 miniature pieces by Scottish Tapestry Artists Regrouped (STAR) pays homage to the French weaving heritage, while also showing the breadth of creativity in current practice in Scotland. All graduates from Edinburgh College of Art, these 18 weavers are the most prominent Scottish tapestry artists, notably Archie Brennan and Maureen Hodge.
